After years of anticipation, Louis Koo’s sci-fi epic Back to the Past is finally slated for release during the 2026 Chinese New Year season. The announcement was made at the 27th National Film Promotion Conference held in Xiamen on May 22, 2025.
This film serves as a continuation of the beloved 2001 TVB drama A Step into the Past, reuniting original cast members including Raymond Lam, Jessica Hsuan, Sonija Kwok, and Joyce Tang. Notably absent is Kwong Wa, who portrayed the antagonist Zhao Dao in the original series.
Directed by Ng Yuen-fai and Jack Lai, with action choreography by the legendary Sammo Hung, the film was completed in July 2019. However, its release faced delays due to regulatory concerns over its time-travel theme. Now cleared for release, fans can look forward to a simultaneous debut in both Hong Kong and mainland China.
The storyline picks up 19 years after the original series, following Hong Siu Lung (Louis Koo) as he grapples with the consequences of his past actions in the Qin Dynasty. Determined to rectify history, he embarks on a mission to reclaim what he lost, even if it means usurping the throne.
Back to the Past promises a blend of historical intrigue and science fiction, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience for fans of the original series and newcomers alike.
